Still have Questions about the 2008 Season?Listed below are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the 2008 season of the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup. |
Q: Which teams have been invited to participate?
A: The list of teams has not yet been finalized. A representative from the Cup will begin contacting anglers starting Friday, November 2nd, 2007 to finalize their participation for 2008.
Q: Who chose the teams?
A: Representatives from the Cup with first-hand knowledge of the history, competitions and teams were responsible for deciding which teams would be included.
Q: What criteria were used to choose the teams?
A: Teams were chosen based on points and past performance, as well as desire and ability to fish all 2008 events.
Q: Were some teams not chosen because they have criticized the Cup in the past?
A: The teams chosen for the Cup this year were chosen because of their performance, participation and support of the Cup. The Cup has always welcomed feedback and will continue to do so, and in no way penalizes teams who make suggestions in the best interest of the Cup and its anglers.
Q: Will there be an opportunity for teams not chosen in 2008 to qualify for 2009?
A: Yes. A U.S. Invitational will be held in the fall of 2008 where teams will have the chance to qualify for the 2009 season. Up to five spots will also be reserved for club teams to be invited to compete in 2009.
Q: How do you "qualify" for the invitational?
A: Representatives from the Cup with first-hand knowledge of the history, competitions, and teams will be responsible for deciding which teams will be invited.
Q: When will we have to put down our deposits? How much will they be? And when will the balance be due for each event?
A: The deposits will be half of the total entry fees and will be due at the time of registration, which will be in early January. The balance of the total entry fees will be due 30 days prior to the first event.
Q: Why has pre-fishing on Thursday been eliminated?
A: The future of the Cup is directly tied to the support it is given by communities and fans. In order to grow the Cup, we feel it is important to go out and meet with the public and become ambassadors for the sport of professional redfishing. In order to mandate this community outreach it was necessary to eliminate one day of pre-fishing, a decision we believe enriches the Cup and ensures growth through community support.
Q: What are the venues for 2008?
A: The venues are still being finalized and will be announced online in the coming weeks.
Q: What are the dates for 2008?
A: April 25-27, May 30-June 1, August 15-17, September 26-28, October 10-12 (Championship)
Q: Why were the entry fees increased?
A: The entry fees were increased because the stakes are much higher, and the fees must be kept in line with the purses. In addition, our entry fees are now on par with other professional circuits such as golf and bass fishing.
Q: Are there any rule changes for the 2008 season?
A: The rules for 2008 have not yet been finalized, but will be made available in the coming weeks. That being said, there are no rule adjustments planned that would significantly change the competition.
However, we can tell you that, as mentioned previously, Thursday will be off limits for pre-fishing and will instead be a mandated event in the community.
Q: Will the Redfish Cup format continue to change from year to year?
A: The Redfish Cup has always sought to provide our anglers with the most professional tournament circuit possible. As the Cup has grown it has been necessary to make changes in keeping with this ideal, and we believe each change has been vital to the success we now enjoy.
That being said, it is our hope that following these changes for the 2008 season we will be able to maintain a consistent and successful format.
Q: Why is the format of the Cup being changed?
A: As part of our mission to allow anglers to make a living as competitive saltwater anglers we felt it necessary to eliminate some events in order to increase payouts and the overall professionalism of the circuit. This decision was not made lightly and was only done after lengthy consultations with anglers and sponsors. We feel it is in the best interests of everyone involved with the Cup to institute these changes for 2008.
We continue to value the support and participation of every amateur and professional angler out there, including those who have fished Cup events in the past and those who may do so in the future. The growth of saltwater fishing as a prominent sport on par with the Bassmaster Elite Series is our ultimate goal, and this format change is the best avenue to get us there.
