This year marks the sixth season of the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup, the nation’s premier saltwater fishing tournament. With the popularity of redfishing exploding over the last several years, the Redfish Cup has been the preeminent organization in both promoting and growing this exciting sport. What started as a simple tournament circuit has now become the face of an entire movement, stretching well beyond the world of fishing.
The Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup unites an army of people and resources as the nation’s elite two-man saltwater angler teams compete at four regular-season events and one championship. Supported by legions of devoted fans, a redfish event has become far more than just another fishing tournament, and the scores of fans flocking to these events can prove it. Each host community knows when the Redfish Cup comes to town, people will come to see it.
But fans of professional redfishing don’t have to hit the road to watch all the action unfold: For the second year in a row, fans can visit both RedfishCup.com (the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup’s official website) and ESPNOutdoors.com, the official partner site of the Cup for online coverage.
Before anglers hit the weigh-in stage, the live Internet show, “Hooked Up,” features ESPN2 personalities who dissect the day’s drama on the water. Then, once the weigh-in begins, up-to-the-minute information lets fans track weights and team standings in real time.
In addition to Internet coverage, the 2008 Cup continues its television broadcast relationship with ESPN2.The Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup television show hits the air later in the season, but also moves to weekend afternoons and weekday evenings, to further maximize audience size and scope.
The 2008 Cup is also happy to offer Redfish Nation, a quarterly print publication giving its 2500-plus Redfish Nation members more in-depth analysis of tournaments, behind-the-scenes glimpses into the lives of Cup teams, and tips and tricks from the pros.
During the 2008 season, there will be a greater emphasis on community outreach for the Cup and its anglers; Thursdays prior to the event will be designated as days to be spent off the water and out in the community. Expect increased angler appearances and charity work in each host community before the tournament begins.
The Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup is also the only saltwater tournament giving competitors the chance to make a living as professional anglers. In fact, the Redfish Cup will give away almost $1 million dollars over the course of the 2008 season — the largest in the history of competitive saltwater fishing.
The Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup has always sought to provide anglers with the most professional tournament circuit possible, and 2008 will be bigger and better than ever. Those associated with the Cup value the support and participation of every amateur and professional angler, including those who have fished Cup events in the past, and those who may do so in the future.
