GULF SHORES, Ala. --- A sea of sand and all the makings of a beach blowout was the backdrop for the weigh-in at the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup All Star event at Lulu’s Homeport Marina.
Despite the fact that Lulu’s is known for its partying atmosphere, there wasn’t anything about the Day One action from the water that said anything about having a party.
GULF SHORES, Ala. --- It was a day that began uneventfully enough, with calm seas and the sun high overhead. But it ended with a field made up of survivors and casualties, bedraggled anglers limping their way to the weigh-in stage.
Jim Franklin and Brian Fornea were able to climb atop the heap of All Stars, bringing in 12.82 pounds for a 27.42 pound two-day total. Charlie Thomason and Shane Pescay actually brought in a larger haul on Day Two but stand in second place with a healthy 27.11 total, while Anthony Randazzo and Billy Wallbaum are in third with 26.77 pounds. Jody Morris and Manny Perez sit in fourth with 26.26 pounds of redfish, and Tim Youngs and Jason Catchings round out the top five with 24.72 total pounds.
GULF SHORES, Ala. --- Charlie Thomason and Shane Pescay stood shoulder to shoulder on the weigh-in stage, looking like two exhausted prizefighters, heavyweight belts triumphantly slung over each of their shoulders.
Thomason was overcome with emotion after three grueling days that ended with his first championship title after five long years on the circuit.
