Morehead City, NC - With just one stringer breaking the 14-pound mark, Day One of the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup All Star Last Cast demonstrated just how much the waters off the coast of North Carolina have changed in a year. After last year's stockpiles of redfish, most anglers felt the numbers were down considerably.
"Last year, we had 286 fish through two days," 2007 Redfish Cup champion Andrew Bostick said. "Today, we caught only seven fish all day."
Morehead City, N.C. - The tournament is called the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup All Star Last Cast, but angler Greg DeVault's very first cast proved more promising.
The father-and-son team from Florida boated a healthy six-and-a-half-pound keeper to start their day off with a bang. With a loud popping cork and a hot, trailing shrimp presentation, Greg and his father Bill DeVault never slowed down all morning.
MOREHEAD CITY, NC - Sun-Tzu, the fabled Chinese general and fabled author of "The Art of War" is attributed to once saying, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer." On a Sunday's sunny final day at the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup All Star Last Cast, anglers Mike Friday and Danny Latham employed the ancient strategy to take the title.
Fishing within sight of fellow anglers Greg and Bill DeVault and within a few miles of the remainder of Sunday's Top Five teams, Friday and Latham caught two redfish on topwater lures weighing in at 13.88 pounds.
