ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The oldest city in America has seen its share of change throughout the years. For the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup anglers navigating the waters around St. Augustine, constant change came in the form of the largest tidal fluctuation experienced at any event on the circuit.
The highest and lowest tides of the year for the area called for unforgiving fishing precision at the last Eastern Division event. But while many predicted locals familiar with these "First Coast" tides to have the competitive advantage, Day One at St. Augustine proved to offer mixed results.
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – For most Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup anglers on Day Two at St. Augustine, fish were much hungrier. But the stringers presented at weigh-in weren’t necessarily any heavier. Throughout the tide-dizzied field, weights were noticeably down, matching the extremely low waters that greeted the competition upon launch.
But Randy Hendrick and Brian Alderman never got that memo.
Scott O’Brien and Wade Hastings were only satisfied, not thrilled, with their final day efforts as they hustled back to the weigh-in stage on Sunday. Their previous two days at the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup in St. Augustine had produced consistent 11-pound stringers. But Day Three was different and it was different for everyone.
Just before noon, severe thunderstorms rolled across skies, sending damaging lightning and blinding rain from St. Augustine north to Jacksonville. The change in weather certainly affected the bite for many teams. But for O’Brien and Hastings two smaller bites was all they needed to take the title. The only limit on a soggy Sunday saw the scales tip at 7.76 combined pounds.
